Day 13 (&12): Over the Undercast to Kentucky

Today’s leg was meant to happen yesterday, but 1) the weather wasn’t so good for the route and 2) we needed a rest day. This is where having great friends is so great. We just said, “Can we spend another day here and rest?” And so we went on another easy bike ride, and…rested. Thank you so much Kitt and Doug.

To make the weather conditions work for us today, we had to leave early so any thunderstorms wouldn’t have a chance to develop. I flew the first leg from Delaware Coastal to Lewisburg WV – Greenbrier Valley Airport (KLWB) – and I was very proud of my landing again. Shit pattern, but great landing. In my defense, we couldn’t descend to the airport until it was less than three miles away because we spent most of the flight (and the next leg too) flying over an undercast.

This white blanket of undercast went on and on.

There were some pretty views both on that first leg, and the second from KLWB to KLOU – Louisville KY. But mostly we flew above the clouds because mostly the Blue Ridge Mountains were below them. The pretty views were of rolling countryside with forest and farms and cute small towns.

Also, let me rewind a second and give a shout out to KLWB for being another super cool, friendly, beautiful airport that we were lucky to visit. It’s in the middle of nowhere, and yet it’s very well appointed and has an excellent Mexican restaurant. I tried to diplomatically ask about how often they get corporate/private jets coming in, and the nice lady at the desk said, ‘It just depends on what’s going on in Greenbrier.” What I really wanted to ask was, “Why are there three multi-million dollar jets here and who are the rich owners?” Any ideas people, you can put them in the comments.

Dan drew the short straw on landings because KLOU was gusty and the runway sloped up, then down, and I swear as we got on the downward part a big gust pushed the plane from behind – even though that’s not how the wind was reported. For all you non-pilots, you take off AND land INTO the wind. Landing with a tailwind is a bad idea.

On final for KLOU.

I’ve never been to Kentucky before, and Louisville has a cute downtown. They have handy tourist information placards about whiskey, so it’s my kind of place.

Louisville is cute.

We’re now heading back west, and I really wish we could have more stops and more days to explore.

Thanks for the update and the pictures.  One has to wonder what Old Underroof Whiskey tasted like.
