Day 8 (&7&9) Over the Blue Ridge

Let me start by saying the Day 7 was a wonderful day. The storm system STILL wouldn’t get enough out of the way for us to fly out, so we stayed in Nashville and were fortunate enough to attend Music Lab’s (Ben’s music school) showcase. It was a student concert with a complete range of ages and music genres showing Nashville’s talented and unique music community. We loved it and felt honored to be there.

On Sunday (Day 8) we still had to wait till 11am for the dang weather, but at last we had a path to Charlottesville VA (KCHO). First we flew north out of Nashville (KJWN) through Kentucky, then east through West Virginia and over the Blue Ridge Mountains into Virginia. I was born in Virginia and attended University of Virginia (Mr. Jefferson’s University for you purists) so it felt good coming home. I’ve wanted to land at CHO since I got my pilot’s license and I got a beautiful straight in approach with no other planes around. Gorgeous. And a great landing too, if I do say so myself.

Kentucky countryside. You can’t see the horses, but I bet they’re down there.
West Virginia coal mine. There are still a lot of them.

The Blue Ridge looking blue, and a little hazier than my fantasy of perfect clear sunny skies to fly in to CHO.

We stayed with some dear friends who looked after us beautifully, visited Monticello (Day 9) and The University (also an acceptable way to refer to UVA), ate, drank and were very merry with lots of family stories flying around (see my pun there?).

Monticello

UVA’s Rotunda building. Look a little like Monticello? Yeah, Jefferson liked Roman architecture.

Now I’m sitting at the CHO FBO writing this while Dan takes our friends for a little sightseeing spin. Then we’ll load up and fly to Delaware Coastal (KGED). And I will get to touch The Atlantic Ocean.

KJWN to KCHO around weather and military operating areas (MOAs)
